While it’s clearly not meant to compete with the latest offerings from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, there’s more than enough room in the industry for the company to carve out an exciting new niche. It’ll be interesting to see where the Atari VCS goes from here. That said, the Atari VCS looks to provide ample overhead for computer hobbyists or those who are looking for a small yet efficient machine for productivity tasks using Windows or Linux. You also get dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5, USB 3.0 support, and upgradeable storage. It supports 4K resolution, HDR, and 60FPS content. The VCS is a sleek, pint-sized computer powered by an advanced AMD Ryzen processor. While gaming is obviously the platform’s focus, you can do a lot more with the hardware. Additionally, every VCS comes bundled with the Atari VCS vault, giving players access to 100 Atari 2600 and arcade titles along with free access to the Antstream arcade streaming service. These include a mix of revamped Atari classics and all-new indie properties, including Boulder Dash Deluxe, Jetboard Joust, Sir Lovelot, Something Ate My Alien, Danger Scavenger, Guntech, Tailgunner, Atari’s Missile Command: Recharged, to name a few.
More than a dozen titles will be available for the VCS alongside the system’s launch. The All-in model is available in both onyx and a vintage-style black walnut that harkens back to the iconic Atari 2600’s aesthetic.
Additionally, the All-In system bundle includes an Atari VCS Classic Joystick ($59.99) and Atari VCS Modern Controller (also $59.99) for $399.99. The standard edition, the Atari VCS Onyx Base system, is priced at $299.99. There will be two versions of the console available at launch. Atari has announced that the VCS will launch on J– less than two weeks from the time of this writing. However, if you’ve been chomping at the bit to get your hands on the brand’s first video computer system in 40 Years, we’re happy to report that the wait is almost over. It’s been a long and winding road for the Atari VCS since it was first announced in the Summer of 2017.
